Tips for an aspiring student?
on: April 21, 2020, 07:46:51 PM
Hello! I started playing piano when I was in elementary school (1st-4th grade) but I never really practiced and I stopped playing going into 5th (I have also sang in a choir for the last 5 years). I am now almost 18, and have picked it back up. I have been practicing 30min-2 hrs every day for about a month. For a gauge of my technical abilities, I am halfway through with Bach's minuet in G after about 2 hours of total practice. I am wondering anyone can give tips: repertoire ideas, musicality ideas, practicing tips, etc.. which can help me develop piano skills through this quarantine. Hope you all are safe and healthy!

Keep up the practicing. As we all know "practice makes better" never perfect, but hey, very few will know. Name any genius who examined his work after it was done and knew that he could have made it better. But c'est la vie!

A large part of our musical journey is to be aware of repertoire that is out there, inform ourselves. Google: "Free easy piano sheet music" and see where it takes you, explore all of the free music out there print it out, try it out, see what interests you.
You need to know all the levels of difficulty (from basic to manageable to challenging to impossible) that is out there and that is a very personal experience. All of these self realizations will help you be more secure as to what music you are ready for. For almost all cases it is safer to work with pieces which are too easy for you and you can learn fast than to learn pieces which tax a lot of your time and force you into inefficient solutions.
