If you are referring to the Waldstein Sonata:
It was dedicated to Beethoven's friend and patron Count Ferdinand von Waldstein.

Waldstein is the surname of a patron and friend of Beethoven, Count Ferdinand Von Waldstein.
The surname "Von Waldstein" literally translates to "Of Foreststone," which suggests that the Count's origins are somewhere German-speaking with lots of rocky forests. It's weird, but that's how Saxon and old German surnames worked.
