Romantic Repertoire Suggestions
on: May 31, 2020, 11:54:59 PM
Hey there,

I was wondering if you guys could give me some suggestions for repertoire, specifically the romantic period. Right now I'm working on the Revolutionary Etude. Should I take on another piece or focus solely on this for now, if not any suggestions would be great.

Sorry if this is a common question.

Thanks fo the Help.

I don’t see how anyone on a forum can answer the question if you should add a second piece:  how difficult is the Revolutionary Etude for you?  How much practice time do you have?  What composers do you like?  What have you played?

I suggest you look at nocturnes by Chopin, if Chopin is appealing to you or other Romantic composers.  Listen to a lot of YouTube: Liszt, Schumann, Brahms, as a start.

Hi Sdphins,

Is the Revolutionary Etude the only piece you are currently working on? How difficult is it for you? Could you also reply with your current/former repertoire?

As for another piece, what pieces would you like to play? Great suggestions by Dogperson; some of my favourite romantic composers are Liszt, Schubert, and early Scriabin :)
I hate music (and sarcasm) :)

Beethoven Sonata 18
Liszt Rhapsodie Espagnole
Prokofiev Sonata 4 op.29
Scriabin Piano Concerto

Yes, I'm currently just working on the Revolutionary Etude. My repertoire is abysmal.
-Moonlight Sonata (1st)
-Nocturne 20 C# minor
-Chopin Prelude op 28 no. 4
-Liebestraum no. 3
-Lassan from Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2
-Nuvole Bianche (Contemporary)
-Chopin Waltz in A minor
-Bach WTC prelude 1

That's about it, I really need some help in just being able to grow my repertoire. I would love to play some Brahms, particularly one of his sonatas, but it is out of my league. :'( Any good Brahms pieces for someone of my level? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you guys so much! :)

You still haven’t replied how many hours per day or per week hou’re Working on the Revolutionary Etude,  from looking at your repertoire, I’m wondering if you should put it into the ‘later’ stack so you can devote more time to more pieces.  We can’t know for certain, so do think about what is right for you.

Brahms: look at intermezzos 116.6 and 117.1 or 76.7

Here’s 76.7 played by Kissin

Yes, I agree it might be time to put it into the later stack. I practice anywhere from 2.5 - 5 hours a day. I think it would be wise to devote more time as you said to multiple pieces and work my way technically to revolutionary. Thank you ;D and I love the intermezzos.

Hi!
Have you looked at some of the Chopin Preludes, 8, 12, 16, 19, and 24 are a few of the more tricky ones. 19 especially is evil... to me at least. Chopin's Etudes Op. 10 Nos. 2, 4, and 9 are also nice, maybe check some of them out!

Thank you for the help, those preludes look great! I love op. 10 no. 4, It is definitely something I'd like to attempt in the future. Again thanks everyone for helping out ;D!

Chopin Nocturne Op. 32 No. 2 is a beautiful one. Brahns Rhapsody Op. 79 No. 2 is a classic intermediate-level piece. Working on the whole opus (i.e. playing Op. 79 No. 1 as well) is a good project.

For an intensely rewarding experience play some Schumann. You should be ready for his Op.2 Papillons or even Op.1 Abegg Variations if you are up for it.

If you can master these you can move on to his virtuoso works such as the Symphonic Etudes, Fantasy, Kreisleriana, etc.
