Need Information on Used Pianos
on: January 30, 2005, 04:36:45 PM
Hello,

My parents want to buy me a new piano. I just paly it and do not know very much about used pianos. I would like to know what brands of upright pianos I should look out for, which are good quality, but are not tons of money depending on the Year. I also want to know what brands are not the greatest.

Any input is Greatly appreciated.

It depends what your (or your parents) budget is.

A good choice is a Yamaha, but  you should go around and play a few of any make and make some decisions based on sound, tone, & feel.

There's no rush.

Start with carefully reading Larry Fine's book "The Piano Book: Buying & Owning a New or Used Piano" and the 2004/2005 supplement, which lists latest manufacturer and pricing information. This book is a must for anybody contemplating the purchase of a pianom new or used. Finally, play on as many pianos you can lay your hands on and compare them repeatedly. Ask a good technician about reliability.

I have narrowed it down to 2 options. I have a used Yamaha U1 fo $3999, and a Kawai K-60 for $4400. I've looked at the interior of both pianos for signs of use, and they both were very good.

My question is, which model is better for what i wans, an upright piano to practice on at home, that has good sound for company, and is known for lasting longer.

Again any help will be greatly appreciated.

PS: both those prices are in Canadian dollars, so it may seem a little expensive bgecause up here in Canada our dollar sucks. :-\
