How do you stretch fingers to play the large chords ?

Good point.

I had my mom hire a teacher me to show me how for a while, and then she got bored and the teacher left me with her stretching machine.

It was a very confusing time for me when I was a child.

I'd probably stay in school. Refrigerator repair is a very good industry.

Away from piano I am doing finger stretching exercises ( eg pressing thumb and pinky against table top with fully outstretched fingers

Yes. I somewhat think my initial joke of almost a year ago was misguided.

I have found value in stretching the "web" between the thumb and first finger, but not in any methodical way, and not since I was a pre-teen. Certainly no machines involved.

Just through playing repertoire or different styles is the right way to develop reach.

There is somebody here who has a reach between fingers 4 and 5 of about a major sixth in RH, but one wouldn't try to do that without an unusual physiological shape, would one?

I don't know that there are any unusually large chords in this piece. But even if there were, in my own case thinking that I must "stretch" makes it difficult for me and causes me to automatically add a lot of tension. But I find that even big chords at the edge of my span can be played without feeling tense. But I must think of it as something that is natural and easy to do and learn to release tension from my fingers and hands to be able to do so.
