Bach-Zhukov: Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor
on: August 14, 2020, 11:50:40 PM
Hello all,

So, after spending a few months on the works of Liszt, and then slowly making my way to his transcriptions of some of Bach's great and immortal organ works, I began to listen to and fall in love with, once again, Bach's great Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. As such, I have begun exploring various transcriptions of this great work for solo piano. I really enjoy both the d'Albert and Fazil Say transcriptions of this work and love them both for different reasons. However, I encountered a transcription of the work on youtube by Igor Zhukov. For some reason, his interpretation of the work really speaks to me (video below). Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any suggestion that this transcription was ever published.

With this in mind, I want to ask if anyone has access to this music or knows where it can be purchased. Obviously, if there is no option, I can go with one of the other great transcriptions. Would just be unfortunate that such a great interpretation was never published.

Thanks for your help.

-KC

Ah the frustration of being unable to find a bach transcription score.... I know your pain, I'm still searching for the bach d minor concerto by stradal... It's been years. The d'albert arrangement seems good to me, also krystian zimerman did one also
Beethoven-Alkan, concerto 3
Faure barcarolle 10
Mozart-Stradal, symphony 40

Wow, someone finally replied!

I had forgotten about this thread and I feel I should update on my search. I was really looking for a nice transcription that captured the grandness of the organ and also stayed true to the score (as much as possible) and didn't add notes that were too extraneous, etc.

I had pretty much given up looking for the Zhukov or Zimerman arrangements. However, I came across a beautiful version that exceeded all of my expectations (right when I had just about settled on learing the d'Albert version - which is quite lovely, just not as grand as I wanted).

So I came across the video below on youtube. It was a beautiful transcription of the passacaglia and fugue. Also, it was just published in recent time. The author also describes his quest to find a transcription of the piece and decided that he would make one himself (which is included in the introduction to the piece). I will also include the link to the publisher if anyone is interested. I just started working on this piece and thought I would share. It is quite satisfying.
