Need Help Identifying This Piano
on: February 15, 2002, 08:39:54 AM
We just bought a used piano that was delivered to our home today. It is definitely in used condition but, it seems to be very well built and also very old. I cant seem to find any indication of when it was built or even who it was made by. Here is a description:

Dark stained broad grained wood with what appears to be finished with nitro cellulose lacquer that has checked with age. The names "Wessell, Nickel, & Gross" are stamped inside. This is not a player piano and there is no evidence of the player mechanism ever having been removed so, I am guessing the "Wessell, Nickel, & Gross" refers to the action. The strings are mounted on a gold colored metal frame. Along the top of the frame is stamped "Swing Desk Mechanism patented 3/24/1885 Flanged Metal Fram patented ?/?/1893" (the "?" indicates numbers that I cannot read). The keys appear to be painted wood as the edges reveal exposed wood where the paint has worn off over the years.

Finally, the name Angelus Boston is stamped on the metal frame the strings are mounted on. I initially assumed this was the manufacturer but, I could find no reference to this on the internet.

Thanks for any info you can provide. ???

Don't have anything conclusive, but try these names out.  These pianos have used the Wessel,e tc actions you have :

Gulbransen
Ivers & Pond
Bush & Lane

I'll letcha know if I narrow it down any!

Good luck!

As far as I can find something. The three names you've found inside refer to a company that built actions. The Pierce Piano Atlas only tells this and says that they started around 1870.

Try the internetsite of  Pierce piano Atlas on:

www.pianoatlas.com

good luck!
