Here it appears to be a gimick, but it is a legitimate practice technique as an aid to gaining an instinstual feel for how the keyboard is layed out.  Playing passages with one's eyes shut is a way of finding out how well your hands understand from familiarity how the keys are layed out on the keyboard.  I find I can do it with little trouble hs, but have great difficulty ht.  Still being able to do it hs is a reassurance to me.  After playing a passage hs with eyes closed, I find that it improves my playing of the passage ht with eyes open a lot.  It ingrains key positions and obviates the need for looking at the keys so much, if at all, allowing more focus on the music and the tone.

I also have a session in the dark where I just read the notes on the page and dont look down.  I did this with Prokofiev Sonata no 1 and found the leaps to "pedal notes" were greatly improved with accuracy.  When playing at that speed anyhow you need to have a feel because relying on just looking wont give you enough time in the split second to get it right! 8)

hehe my little brother (he's a freshman in high school) plays the maple leaf rag blindfolded. it's pretty funny actually but quite impressive, especially because he's self-taught. He also plays the Piano Man on the piano and harmonica at the same time. He'll make a fine musician when he grows up (he does these things to show off, music is more like doing magic for him at this stage... it's too bad, he's got more potential to be a fine musician than just about anyone i've ever met)
Favorite pianists include Pollini, Casadesus, Mendl (from the Vienna Piano Trio), Hungerford, Gilels, Argerich, Iturbi, Horowitz, Kempff, and I suppose Barenboim (gotta love the CSO). Too many others.

I talked to this guy on AIM and he didn't give two sh!ts about what I was saying. I even play nintendo stuff too, but I never can seem to start a conversation with the guy. So I don't like him.

He has also been talked about a ga-jillion times in this forum. It seems that about once a month, someone "discovers" this guy and posts a thread about it. Do a search on it, and you'll find plenty of opinions.

You should have said, "Gladly, just as soon you learn some real repertoire, d###hebag!" That guy should be strangled with his own blindfold  :D

yup..seen the forum..seen his journal...i was a huge fan..not only does he play fun joke-like songs and popular mainstream..but alot of classical..and good classical too..i admire his artistic ability (although my amateur ear doesnt vouch for much)...but when it comes down to it..no skill or talent will outweigh one's ignorance to eye of the good..

Ive emailed him once and sid I thought he was good and recomended some stuff for him to try and he replied in a nice manner.

I don;t know why he would tell you to F off just for asking for  chat, strange.

positive it was him..i mean his screen name DID say "BliindFoldedPianist"..anyway..dont know if it was a bad day for him or something..but i was a bit offended when i attempted to ask him basic questions about finding a good piano teacher for begining...and he gave me the ol' i'll talk to you if you advertize my website in tell your friends about me etc etc."....he thrives off attention i guess and like i said..when i refused and told him i thought it was rediculoud...he then got vulgar..BUT ANYHOO!!!!..anyone else know how to play mario?

i just found this on his site

im impressed!, a technically impressive performance, and shows alot more dynamics and expression than his mario videos

still he is obviously not a cziffra yet, though he has plenty of time to mature and be a really good pianist i think.

I just watched the Blindfolded Pianist's 9/11 video. Is it just me, or did the section he played starting at 0:44 sound like it was based on the middle E major section of Chopin's Polonaise in A-flat (the Heroic)? You know, repeating octave semiquavers in the left hand, with chords and a melody in the right hand?

Also, at 1:44, I was reminded instantly of the first movement of Rach 3, quite near the beginning at the end of the piano's long A-major mini-cadenza. At 1:51, those minim E's followed by a long low A is exactly like the Rach! (Page 8 in the Boosey and Hawkes 2-piano score)

Maybe I neglected to read something on the website, but this seems very odd!

I saw that 9/11 video too at his site https://www.theblindfoldedpianist.com/video6.htm

He commented about this video:
This video was on www.collegehumor.com, www.jokaroo.com, and www.subrevolt.com. This video is dedicated to and depicts the events of 9/11. I took well-known themes such as Fur Elise and put it in this video. Critics are saying that I shouldn't have done that. My response is that people shouldn't take everything I do literally. Just because I put a little bit of Beethoven in my video doesn't mean I'm trying to copy Beethoven or to make fun of his work. Just remember what happened on 9/11, everything was chaos. There were no logic to the events. That's why I used many different themes from famous composers; I wanted to show how illogical 9/11 was. Also, critics say that I "bang on the piano" in this video. HELL YEAH I bang on the piano!!!!! Do critics think this piece about 9/11 should be played with a warm, round, rich, sensitive tone??? What was required to destroy the steel of the World Trade Center towers none other than a full passenger airplane with a full tank of fuel crashing into the towers at 500 miles per hour???

I enjoyed watching the video, and he captured the "spirit" of 9/11 very well.
