Repertoire to start during the method books?
on: January 16, 2021, 03:25:55 PM
Hello, I've been teaching beginner piano for about half a year now and one of my students is nearly finished with the method book. I want to give him an extra piece from the standard repertoire as something to work on alongside going through the method book, and I was wondering what a good selection would be. I know pieces from Anna Magdalena notebook are an obvious choice, but I'm curious if there's anything else I should be looking at and taking into consideration. Thanks.

Hello,
I am assuming you mean the Alfred’s Piano Lesson Book: Complete Level 1 book because I started with that one but please correct me if I’m wrong. I would recommend the Solfeggietto in C minor by C.P.E. Bach, or the Bach Ave Maria, those are the only two i can think of that would be around his level other than the pieces from the Anna Magdalena book. These might be a little challenging for his level but I would definitely look into them.
I didn’t have much help to offer but I hope this helps,
Alex

I don’t know what level he finished in method books, but Hal Leonard Journey through the Classics has a good selection from elementary to intermediate/fur Elise. You can find the lists of pieces online; they might be good suggestions. Here’s the link to book 1 (out of 4).

I think the notebook of Anna Magdalena is about the third book level, but I might be wrong.
If you look at the pictures you can find the content pages.
