How much do concert pianists practise each day?
on: February 22, 2021, 04:59:29 PM
Hi! I hope it's okay that I make another topic here even if I already posted one recently? I read another thread where people were talking about how much you should practise, and that got me wondering if anybody knows how much actual concert pianists practise? I can imagine that it's much more than us mere mortals who play just for fun :) Maybe there are concert pianists on this forum who can share their secrets??

Thanks :)

Not a concert pianist (just an amateur), but if I have the time I usually like to practice 3-4 hours a day. Tiffany Poon on YouTube said in a video that she usually practices 2-5 hours in a day, but then there are also pianists like Valentina Lisitsa who can practice around 12-14 hours each day. It'll definitely depend on the pianist, the repertoire, if they're preparing for concerts, etc. but this is just what I know.  :)

Rubinstein supposedly practised 3-4 hours a day, I think? I think Andras Schiff has stated similar numbers. I think this is purely in terms of sitting at the instrument though, and that these musicians also think a lot about their craft away from the instrument. And Cortot practised 4 hours each morning, and much more during the summers (off season), at least when he was younger.

I think the only universal is that the amount is pretty much always above 2-3 hours each day, which isn't saying much because most serious pianists put in that amount of time anyway. There are possible exceptions to this who have near-photographic memory such as Gould and Gieseking, but they were still probably putting in a similar amount of time reading scores.

I think Evgeny Kissin works at the piano 8 hours a day. I recall him (or possibly someone in the know) saying that in a Youtube clip but I don't remember which one.
