A couple of notated improvisations
on: April 01, 2021, 11:24:48 PM
I have been writing out a few of the past year's improvisations by ear: generally ones which I think have a fair bit of character and which I feel I could ultimately use as compositions on a concert program.
Unlike the full length improvised (and now notated) sonata I posted earlier, which really did involve a huge amount of effort, these two weren't too difficult to get to the stage where I have a respectably accurate paper realisation of what was played. Also I think its maybe quite a good exercise in terms of making me think about how I seem to construct improvisations.

Whatever the mode of generation it is the sound of the end result which matters but scores do have the advantage of enabling other people to enjoy playing your improvised music themselves and your many short improvisations over the last few months are certainly worth making the effort in that respect. Unless I consciously improvise using rhythms of notation I cannot be bothered trying to do that any longer, so I admire your persistence.

In some ways doing this has clarified to me that my improvisations are more "concrete" than I might have imagined. I think this has, tbh, changed over the past ten years and I've made more of an effort to keep them still free, but while remaining within the confines of a certain formal framework. I think we've had this discussion before, and I've come to realise that I view my brand of improvisation as "real-time composition". In any case, exerting that level of discipline certainly makes it easier to transition them into compositions. I'm being fairly picky, however, in the ones which I try to notate, and in general they are the improvisations which I'm particularly fond of. Tbh the better ones I would quite like to record again (under more favourable audio conditions) but the second time as a composition as opposed to an improvisation.
