How do you pace yourself?
on: February 05, 2005, 02:37:47 AM
New to the forum, been doing searches every day and finding wonderful linformation. :) I'm entering the local recital, probably about 5/6 pieces I suppose.

On the list is

Courante - Lully
   Harris Book 6

March of the Buffoons - Dale Reubart
   RCM Repertoire Book 6

Divertimento, Minuet & Trio - Haydn
   Harris 6A

Sarabande - Pierre Gallant
   RCM Repertoire Book 6

Fantasia - Telemann
   Harris 6A

Sight reading (one of my strong points)

Waltz in A Min. - Schumann
   RCM Repertoire Book 6

For Susanna Kyle - Bernstein
   RCM Repertoire Book 6

I won't be choosing all of them, I'd never have them all performance ready. I thought I'd just list the pieces anyway. :) How does everyone pace themselves when they have an event like this coming up?

If it's coming up soon (as in a week) I try to see what my schedule is like.  If it's filled to the brim, (in other words busy with other stuff) I'll usually ditch some of other repertoire to work just on the pieces I'm preparing - maybe I'll throw in a piece that is a fun piece just so I can get away for a while.  Then I practice a lot ... a whole lot ...
The day of the recital I do some warm-ups.  It depends on how I'm feeling.  Sometimes I'll play the pieces, sometimes I don't.  I feel like I use a lot of energy performing, so I want to save it up.  But definitely play something - even if it's only ten minutes.  Some others advise not to touch piano on the big day to completely store up, but I believe 10 minutes won't kill you and you won't be completely cold.
One tip - the night before, get plenty of rest.  Chill out.  Watch tv or something.  A million hours cramming will NOT help and will most likely contribute to you being tired - which most likely means wrong notes anyway.  I know some people are going to counterargue and say practice your tails off the night before, but this is my advice - don't go crazy the night before.
Good luck and have fun!

It's actually not until April, and I was trying to find how people don't get sick of their pieces but thank you very much for the tips, they'll definetely help.  Sometimes you only have 1/2 pieces a day. Since it's not just me playing. I probably should have worded it different, it's actually the Kiwanis Festival. I'm sure I can do better this year anyway, I didn't even know about playing with 'emotion' last year. My teacher hasn't even discussed it with me  :-\ That's off topic though.

Would you go for using the book over memorization for musicality if you don't know if you have it 100% memorized? That's getting way off topic. I have to stop this off topic stuff. I found I was really tired last year, maybe from being really nervous and not knowing what to expect.

Memorization has its own rewards, and is definitely cool, but if you're not 100% familiar with the piece, I suggest bringing your sheet music with you - preferably copied so you DON'T have to turn the pages.  Rather than stumble somewhere and get completely lost, you'll have the music to guide you - and if you play well enough, the audience won't really mind.  At least that's what I've discovered.
