Sounds like you need to use a second voice. At the bottom of the note input window, there is a list of "1", "2", "3", etc. Those are different voices. The dotted half note would belong to voice "1", whereas the 32nd notes would belong to voice "2", or vice versa.

xvimbi is right, although I think the numbers at the bottom are in Finale, not Sibelius (or maybe they are if you're using Sibelius 3). My version (Sibelius 2) doesn't have the voice numbers at the bottom. At any rate, if you do not see the numbers, you can hit the "general" tab on the floating note-input menu. You will see a drop down menu labeled "voice," and I believe you can add up to three independant voices (four total).

Peace,
Bri

ok, one more thing:

to select multiple notes, I click one, then hold down Ctrl and then go on to select more notes.  The problem is that if I make one mistake and click the bare page instead of the note I want to select, all the previously selected notes are deselected and I have to do it all over again!  Is there a better way?  I hate using the mouse.

Thanks

First, to flip the stems just select the note or a group of notes and hit X.

Second, to select a group of notes, you need to hit shift, not Ctrl, although I think that's probably what you meant. Anyway, an easier way to select a bunch of notes is to simply select the first note of the group, then hold shift and select the last note of the group. All the notes in between will automatically get selected. For instance, if you have a string of of sixteenth notes on one staff that you want to select, then select the first note of the string, then hold shift and select the last note you want selected. Same with a chord. Select the bottom note of the chord, then hold shift and select the top note (or vice-versa), and with chords, this works on one staff or across both staves (or more depending on how many staves you have).

Hope that helped

Peace,
Bri

Hello Sibelius users, hope you're all still around after 500 days on ice.     Is there a general quick fix for the way you are whisked away to the next line after putting a note on the last beat thereon?    I have a variety of tactics to overcome the problem, but if the function could be switched off altogether, that would be nice.

Does anyone actually run courses in Sibelius (pref in Australia).   The built-in training videos (in Sibelius 4) are good,  but I've moved along from there to a stage where learning mostly comes from hitting a snag and diving into the manuals looking for answers.

Greetings from Perth, where a Def Lennard concert in a football stadium at the end of my street is making it very hard to hear the telly.   Cheers.
