Repertoire Ideas Needed
« on: June 04, 2021, 02:42:35 PM »
Hello,  I am looking for a romantic or impressionist piece to round out my audition material and recital program.  I plan to audition as a piano minor next year and would like to choose something unusual.   My teacher encourages me to choose my own music but will veto anything she thinks I am not capable of.  Program requirements vary but for most I need 3-4 contrasting pieces from different eras.  So far I am playing the following:

Bach WTC 1 P&F Bflat Major
Beethoven Sonata 5 first movt.
Liebermann Gargoyles 3 and possibly 4

My other recent repertoire includes Griffes Night Winds, Schumann Aufschwung, Prokofiev Harp prelude, and Philipp Feux Follets.  I really enjoyed these pieces and want to find something similar that is exciting to play and hear but not overplayed and is not so big that I can't work it up in the next 6 months.  Also, I don't have large hands and must roll 10ths.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading and for any ideas you care to share.

It sounds like a good idea to round your program out with a romantic or impressionistic piece. I'd round it out with something that leans on atmosphere and elastic, long lines since the three pieces you have so far are more rhythmically angular in nature and with shorter phrases.

I have a couple ideas:
-For more impressionistic works, some Ravel pieces came to mind - a few of the Valses Nobles et Sentimentales (Nos. 1, 3, and 7 are my favorites)

-Or a few pieces from Le Tombeau de Couperin, such as the Prelude, Forlane, and Menuet

-On the Romantic side, I recently found this set of 6 pieces by Respighi; the Notturno is a beautiful blend of Romantic and impressionistic styles, and the waltz and intermezzo are wonderful as well

If you’re only going to pick one thing, my vote would probably be the Respighi Notturno (which definitely fits lelle’s suggestion of a more atmospheric piece with long sweeping phrases)

Thank you, this is a good point. I tend to gravitate towards more energetic pieces with fewer sustained lines.  I will keep that in mind when choosing.

Getsiegs,

Thank you for your ideas.  I am printing the Notturno from imslp as I write this and plan to sight-read this today.  I also am printing the Ravel Toccata.  It isn't really contrasting, but I am adding it to my music for later folder.

Visitor,

Thank you for your ideas.  I was only familiar with Szymanowski out of these composers, so you have given me much to listen to.  Although some may be too modern for the purposes of my audition material, I always enjoy discovering new music.
