I find this transcription to be far superior to the later 1942 Horowitz revision….

Listened to this one today, it's also totally fabulous! Pretty surprising to hear Saint-Saens write something macabre and dark.

Indeed. Liszt actually expanded that Saint-Saëns original considerably.... have you heard the original version for orchestra?
