A teacher's extremely valuable asset
on: September 01, 2021, 11:24:59 AM
Yesterday I completed my 4th lesson. My teacher believes much more in my potential than I believe in myself. His encouragement and cheerleading for me really motivated me to get these 5 finger octave chords. I hope if you are a teacher you are giving your students the same kind of encouragement. Yesterday was a bit more like a therapy session than a piano lesson. Now it's on me to improve.

Here is a ‘thumbs up!’ To your post.  Even though I am an older than dirt curmudgeon, my teachers have treated me as if I were preparing for conservatory auditions or competitions.  Having a teacher that believes in you is highly motivating.

My last teacher would not accept the phrase ‘I can’t play that’.  The phrase was REQUIRED to be ‘ I can’t play  that YET’ .  All slip ups  on my part were immediately corrected

I am really curious about how your teacher reacted, can you give some examples from his sentences if you have time to write? I am a young teacher myself and looking for ways to improve my teaching "repertoire". What did he say when you made a mistake? Did he point it out or did he wait for you to find it on your own? How about critique?
