change da colour of ya piano

well......a couple of years ago i was watching the nz version of changing rooms, where neighbours redecorate each others houses etc and there were these people that had a piano and it was brown and when they had finished re decorating the BROWN piano looked really yuk so they got these sticky black things that stuck on so the piano turned black.....do they come off??? do u know what the price is? where to get them from???

they even cud hav been a one off bargain???

I have no idea what it is but my guess is it's probably  not too good for the piano...

And why would you want to turn a brown piano black?

I would never stick anything onto the finish of a piano, as it could damage it, meaning an expensive refinishing job down the road either for you or the next owner.  

This will sound weird, but if I play a piano that is not black, somehow it doesn't seem right to me, whereas a black grand strikes me as being a serious artist's instrument.  It's just a state of mind, but I cannot own anything but an ebony piano.  Plus it goes with any decor.

I'm with you, Rachfan.  I looked at a lot of *art case* pianos, and even though I thought they were gorgeous, they sort of seemed like *pretend* pianos, like they really wouldn't play right or something.  Must be my narrow little brain, but grand pianos just need to be black to be played.

BUT.... while we are on the subject:  While I was shopping it did occur to me that the finish is really just black PAINT, right?  So I was amazed that there were no *paint job* pianos, like on custom cars.  I mean, these rich weird folks in L.A. with lots of money and no taste, you'd think would order a blue piano because it matches their dining room or something, eh?

Funny you should mention that wild color stuff.  Baldwin has introduced bright shiny red pianos, and even one that looks like a yellow Humvee.  I was horrified, naturally, and fervently hope that it's a passing fad.  I mean, if it's not black and dignified, then it's not a piano!

I saw an ad in the paper for violins...except they had dyed them bright purple, yellow, and green!  I was horrified!  The colouring was terrible.

Do you know what the 'black sticky thing' could have been?

Why is it so important for a piano to fit in with the decor?  It sounds rather risky to stick things all over the piano just to make it change colour.

yeah....but when u get weird redecoraters like donald sutherland everything has to look perfect and this sticky stuff...apparently it comes off.

u see weird re decoraters dont actually get how meaningful pianos are.......yeah

i have seen ugly violins in shop violins that r purple and disgusting yellow and green and blue!!!! YUK!!!!

Although I truely appreciate the opinion of those that prefer an ebony grand, personally, I have different taste.  I am in the early stages of selecting a Parlor Grand in the range of 5'5" and 6'1".  I am leaning towards the Kawai RX-3 (6'1"), but of all the ones I've seen, I always gravatate to the gloss wood tone.  Rosewood would be my first choice, and I havn't decided about Mahogany or Walnut, I may end up happy with either.  
I do occational woodworking as a hobby (built the dressers and side tables in my bedroom etc) and am a lover of wood.  To my eye, all ebony pianos look the same, but each woodgrain one has a "fingerprint".  Also, the fingerprints from kids are SOOOO apparent on an ebony finish.  
Clearly to each his own, so even though I think a yellow piano is garish, I would be more likely to respect the owner if he/she plays it well, than a rich non-player that has a wonderful ebony concert grand collecting dust in one of their 3 houses.

Dear Lea,

In answer to your question, I suppose most people prefer black because it is regarded as concert material, sort of like why most pianists prefer to play on Steinways.  All concert grands that I've seen have been black Steinways.  It doesn't necessarily mean black is better than brown or white, or any other colour.
