Scriabin sonata no. 8 best recordings
on: October 29, 2021, 10:01:17 AM
As I think I've finally learned this piece (will record and post in a few weeks), I wanted to expand my understanding of it by listening to some recordings other than Ashkenazy's.
I've listened to different performances on youtube, but nothing comes close to Ashkenazy's. I love everything about it: the voicing, the phrasing, the expression. Could you please recommend some other good performance of this piece that I might have overlooked?

Sofronitsky is generally considered the gold standard for this piece. My favs are the Austbo (also has a really good #6, but my top choice is Woodward's) and the Zhukov:
You should also check out Zhukov's if you haven't already. An exceptional rec for the most part with lots of fresh ideas and wild tone and tempo fluctuations, makes it into an even bigger piece. If Sultanov had lived to play this piece, would probably sound a lot like Zhukov's.
This is a pretty standard interpretation for much of the piece, but in the more languid build-up sections he does a lot of interesting stuff, especially toward the end:
Maltempo also did a full Scriabin Sonata cycle, sure to have some unique twists and turns though I haven't listened to it yet. Same for Berman's, which I'd expect to be very conservative interpretation-wise. Loved his Prokofiev Sonata 4, esp. the 2nd movement, so he's got a good sound for it at least.

It's worth listening to this one on Scriabin's piano:
This is another good complete set not mentioned above:

I've heard that, but I hate how he plays the fourths, half of the notes cannot be heard. I've also listened to Zhukov and I liked it pretty much, except for the tempo in some sections
Thanks fft and thorn for those; I will listen to it all!

Ashkenazy's is the best interpretation in my opinion.
