Mirror-symmetrical Pianism
on: November 03, 2021, 03:00:55 PM
Hi!

Do you know any solo piano pieces that deal with the mirror symmetry of the keyboard? I came across this kind of piano playing through Béla Bartók and his piece "Subject and Reflection" (Mikrokosmos vol. 6, no. 141) and find it very intriguing. He uses the mirror axis d so that both hands use the same black and white keys at the same time. It would be great to know more pieces of this type. Thank you for your contributions.

You could have a look at Vincent Persichetti "Reflective Keyboard Studies for Piano," still under copyright but available thru Amazon (and other places, I'm sure).

Persichetti also wrote a piano sonata and a set of etudes in this style from which his "Reflective Keyboard Studies" where taken.

Thank you for your answers! Since you mentioned Vincent Persichetti, I learned of the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, who was a student of him and wrote "Three Symmetrical Preludes" in 1949. These three pieces use the mirror symmetry of the keyboard as the basis of their compositional structure.

A Kickstarter campaign is currently underway regarding new compositions for piano that are based on the mirror symmetry of the piano: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/victoralcantara/snow-white-inspirations-16-mirror-symmetrical-piano-pieces
