4 pianos on late night
on: February 10, 2005, 02:14:42 AM
Anyone see the four pianos playing on Letterman or Leno. (can't remember which one)
They were pretty good . Very different and not something you see everyday.
Have no idea who they are.
Anyone see it and your impressions

There's two videos on the site below. Excellent recordings if I do say so myself. I haven't heard any of their solo stuff, but they looked and sounded good playing together at least.

Anyone know if there is a 1 or 2 piano trascription of Bernstein's Scenes from West Side Story (that's one of the vids)? I looked on the net a few minutes, but came up with squat. I found a few duos that played it together (on CD's as well as some concert PR on the net), but not any actual sheet music.

Quite true, Hodi! The wrong woman can be quite cold.

I saw them about 2 years ago here in Chicago. There was a pre-concert talk in which they talked about themselves. At that time the youngest boy was 17, and still in high school. The others were either graduates of Julliard, or enrolled. All had full scholarships to Julliard.
They started playing when they were 3, and as each kid grew, they needed another piano in the house, and they ended up with 5 pianos (in the bedrooms!). No, they were not rich, their parents bought cheap upright pianos (all they could afford). There would have been no way for them to go to Julliard if it weren't for the scholarships awarded by the school. They said it's easier to play ensemble when they DON'T see each other, by the way.
The picture doesn't do the girls justice. They are all gorgeous, lithe and sweet. All the kids are well-adjusted, and happy. There was real joy in the way they played piano.
The program was:
1) Concerto for 3 pianos by Mozart (the 2 boys and the youngest daughter played).
2) Concerto for 2 pianos by Poulenc.
The concert was outstanding, and there was a lot of musicality going on. They were not showy or "hollywoody." Thoroughly enjoyable.

there is something i find uneasy about this
i like maverick 'go it alone' pianists, sure its an extramusical thing - but this tidy group of happy kids doesnt appeal to me in a non-musical way
of course im not degrading their music, but i would rather go to see a psycho pianist like horowitz....thats if he were still alive

Lenny, I know what you mean. Some pianists will deliver you with flash and pizzaz, some with safety, and most with a mixture of both. Sometimes I like to see the crazy stuff, sometimes I just want to hear technical virtuosity.
