LIszt "Gnomenreigen" from 2 Concert Etudes
on: November 20, 2021, 07:07:33 PM
Hello all,
I am sharing a recording I made today of Liszt's Gnomenreigen. Worked on it for ~3 months (adult amateur with full time+ job). Recorded in one take on Yamaha N1x with Garritan CFX. There are some obvious mistakes unfortunately. Any critiques are welcome!

Well done! I think you're doing fine and that you have a good idea of the piece. Rhythmically you are a bit unsteady at times, and that can make it more difficult to play quickly than you'd think. It feels a bit like you're trying to push the tempo at times, but it ends up feeling a bit rushed and unsteady. I think you would see a lot of improvement by doing some careful, slow to moderate tempo practice, making sure you play at a tempo where you feel you are fully in control and can play with a very steady pulse. Spend some time doing that and I think you'll find that it becomes much easier to play fast!

Very nice!
I'm impressed that you can learn something like this in only three months as an "amateur with full time+ job"
I agree with Lelle that the main thing for you to work on is steadiness of rhythm and tempo. This of course does not mean that you can't do rubato or slight tempo changes. But it should feel as if you are in complete control.
I might add that from the listener's point of view, a clear and rhythmic execution is more likely to create an experience of 'velocity'. Otherwise, instead of 'fast' one might just hear 'a lot of notes' – or worse: ' a blur'.
