What are the chords used in classical music?
on: March 08, 2022, 06:02:23 PM
Specialy from 1600-1820 period. What are the chords we see in the musics? Are there 7th (like C7 and C7M) and suspended chords (like Csus4 and Csus6)? My teacher is teaching me these two types of chords, but my main interest is on classical music. I have seen sometimes some dissonant chords being in fact used in classical music, like B dim.

Dominant 7ths, half diminished 7ths and diminished 7ths are very common.

Suspended chords are also common, but they are usually not standalone. Instead, you have a 4-3, 6-5 and 9-8 suspensions. Intuitively, whenever you have a Csus4 in classical music, it will always be followed by a C chord.

Sure, you can find all sorts of dissonant chords in music between 1600-1820, minor sevenths, major sevenths, diminished and augmented triads, diminished sevenths, lots of suspensions, sometimes non-functional dissonances. Go ahead and learn it all. Your teacher is right.

You'll find that in classical music all of these chords appear, and the dissonances are usually resolved via voice leading to more consonant chords.
