What would my level be around

Hi.

I can play Tchaikovsky Neapolitan Song in a musical free way, at a pretty fast tempo, or whatever tempo I really choose. This is probably my war horse at the moment, or bach prelude in C major from WTC 1.

I can play bach invention ( c major basically know the whole piece but only the first page hands together, I can learn the rest probably but I'm lazy)

and I can play bach invention in d minor

I also can play the finale to scriabin sonata 4, not the whole thing because I stoppedlearning until right after you hit that FAT D NATURAL octave in the bass... (this is maybe my most difficult but i also can play the beginning to scriabin 8 no 12 but its a simplified version, i just do the D#,A#,D#,A# Long chord in left hand over and over again and I can play the melody pretty freely in right hand i'd say)

Some other pieces I know are like minuet in G in bach, prelude in a major by chopin, and prelude in C major by bach... Some other random stuff,a nd I do have some other stuff basically 90% completed but this is everything I can play well...

I'm strating to get to the point where no piece scares me, but, I am very impatient when it comes to learning and just want to play everything which is VERY annoying. I think I have strong technique, but my sightreading is what lacks and keeps me frmo learning new stuff as fast as I'd want to...

I'm wondering if there is anyone who can gauge my level and would recommend some pieces (i made a spreadsheet of around 100+ pieces I'd like to learn where some are easy and some are more challenging), and i'm also wondering if there is anythings I can do to speed up note recognition, advanced rhythms, and sight reading...


I've thought trying to do drumming or handwriting bachsi nventions on sheet music over again, but haven't tried this stuff and am curious to see how it would help...

A brief note: WHAT KIND OF SCARES ME IS BACH FUGUES AND PIECES WITH POLYRHYTHMS OR JUST AWKWARD RHYTHMS, but, I think if I wokr at them hard hands separate I can maybe figure them out, but I know my weaknesses well but, am lazy on fixing them, and don't know what I should be doing....

It's pretty hard to tell without hearing you play. If you post a recording of something in the Audition Room section, you'll probably get more useful feedback.

I'd second on the request that you post a recording to help determine some kind of level. Often it's possible to sort of get through pieces that are above your level, so what you play says something, but far from everything, about where you're at, unfortunately.

From my experience, I think you are doing well. But you did not mention anything about your ear training and your music compreension. How good are you in recognizing chord progressions? Are you aware of the chords you are playing as you play them? Are you familiar with some common types of counterpoint in the music you play? I learned to play by myself, and I thought that all I had to do is to play advanced music. Only later in life I realized what is the study of music all about. If this is your case too, than it is still time to learn. But you have to recognize the problem first.

Take a look at the RCM curriculum (Royal College of Music) which you can download from their website.  Now, something I will add:  Being able to play a piece, and being able to play a piece to the level of a professional are different.  Before I became working with my current teacher who is an RCM examiner, I thought I was pretty great!  Working with her, I realized that my standards and professional level standards are quite different.  Now this is not to discourage you, but to suggest there is a lot you can learn by playing simpler pieces very well and as professionally as possible before you move up to bigger pieces.
