New teacher. Now Czerny...
on: June 29, 2022, 03:53:01 AM
I have a new teacher now. She is turbocharged, yikes! It's going to take me a while to learn how she thinks and how she approaches piano.

She wants me to do some Czerny exercises. I got the books she recommended but the print is so small, squashed together as old style.

My eyesight can't manage that, nor can I manage looking at an electronic screen for very long.

Do they make Czerny exercises available in large print for those of us who can't manage the old style of squashed print?

Thanks.

You need to do it yourself, get an electronic copy, enlargen it and then print it off. You can find the vast majority of classical works here: www.imslp.org

It’s 3 whole books of Czerny to be enlarged. That would be a very cumbersome job.

You probably won't play all exercises in all three books; you can just enlarge them one at a time as you need them.

I hate Czerny and any type of exercises, really! They are a necessary evil imo...

If your teacher is getting you to do every single one she is a sadist and rather unimaginative. It doesn't take that long and if it benefits your eyes you will take time to do it. Failing that buy a large magnifying sheet and secure it on top of the paper in some way.

I would hope it's not "probably", but yeah why not just enlarge the ones you are doing.

Ask any professional classical concert pianist, and they will probably say,  "yes, I learned Czerny studies".  And by the way, they are studies/etudes - not exercises.  Hanon wrote exercises.  Czerny wrapped technical challenges up with harmonic sequence, melodic patterns, and dynamics, which makes them etudes, pieces.

It would help if you told us which opus you are working from.  You've hopefully figured it out by now - no need to "enlarge" the copies (crazy) - just print new ones from IMSLP.  Most of his books of studies have been published with modern print by Alfred.

I use adobe to crop and then print selected area. It maxes out the ideal look on a page. If u do this probably print as u go rather than a one off print all.

Practically speaking, u may be better off buying a 12.9” tablet and view it from there digitally. It’s costly but that depends on how much your time is worth.  I prefer paper but it’s a nice option to have.

I couldn't use any of the printed material in the Czerny book I bought. Magnification didn't help because the print quality is that poor, all of the notes are squished together. I did find other Cherny and Hanon material in among my RCM study books and I found those to be useful. Don't ask me to identify which Cherny or Hanon piece they are because in my ledger book (which I have to keep track of progress) my teacher didn't write the specifics down, only "Czerny" or "Hanon" and the date.

I didn't write them down either.

I tried using a magnifying overlay sheet but it cuts off the edges. The glare from a tablet screen (or even a computer screen) can become overwhelming so I try to avoid such screens. Traditional paper music lit from above is easier on my eyes.

With that said, I am making progress. My teacher has given me the green light to teach beginners. I've started advertising in my area. My teacher also recommended I seek out Suzuki material and try to get qualified in this as it would be of great help to me. It is a tremendous feeling to realize the first 5 years of hard work has brought me this far on piano.
