Van Cliburn Rach 3
on: February 13, 2005, 08:33:43 PM
I have listened to this recording, over and over, and I have heard many performances of the Rach 3.

I cannot believe the lack of mention of this performance.  I think that he makes every second absolutely beautiful.

Has anyone else heard this?

It seems to me that you are being sarcastic, but if you aren't, his recordings are well worth checking out.

I have a CD titled "My favorite Brahms" by Van Cliburn, and i like it very much.  :) :)

I did not listened to his Rachmaninoff 3° piano concerto, tough.

His rach 3 is very good even though his tempi are on the slow side. Generally, i prefer a more virtuostic performance but this recording along with Ashkenazy/Fistoulari is good to listen to when i get sick of the showy versions of other pianists.

When I saw the title of this thread I said "the greatest". I have heard dozens of recordings of this piece, Van Cliburn and Horowitz(/Ormandy) are the only two I routinely come back to.  Van Cliburn really does make every moment convincing, including the first movement cadenza, which some people complain about. I couldn't say enough about his recording of the piece.

Was Van gay?! OOOOHHHHH - He was SO cute. The little speech he made at the airport when he returned from winning was SO adorable... Anyway, I bought the Rach3 and was disappointed with it. I'll listen to it again and maybe reevaluate my opinions... I read recently taht it won a grammy. Honestly, the littel slip between orchestra and soloist on the beginning of the 3rd mvt put me off but like I said Ill try put my prejudices aside and listen to it afresh...

I didn't say that it happened often. I want moisture, speed and fury in this piece.

I never said that fast= showy. Listen to Rachmaninoff's recording, its among the fastest on record (based on the tempi) but would you say that its showy? i wouldn't.

I view showiness (is that even a word?) as having more to do with antics such as excessive rubato, exaggerated volume changes etc than speed. Speed never bothers me when used appropriately. I PREFER fast tempi but it has to serve musical purposes.

ah, so basically langlang is showy?

i actually enjoy that type of rach, along with more sober renditions.
