Should I practice when I'm deprived of sleep?
on: July 21, 2022, 12:26:35 PM
Hey guys. I would like to hear others' opinions of this. I actually had insomnia before I could sleep the previous day and I kept tossing until I finally got to sleep at 5 am plus. I woke up at 11am plus, which I know I only got so less sleep and I still felt lethargic after I woke up.

Now it's already night. I know I need to practice but I don't feel like it, even though my performance is around the corner. I'm thinking of putting my piano practice tomorrow and practice harder, since I'm even dozing off while using my phone and listening to my pieces over and over again. Is this okay to delay just for a day?  :(

From what I understand of the importance of sleep, your practice might not do any good if you are sleep deprived anyway so I would say get some sleep, then practise when you are refreshed.

Something I've learned over time is that I never practice well with insufficient sleep. If I don't get enough sleep at night and want to practice during the day, I'll take a nap until I feel better. Honestly I feel it might even be optimal to sleep a bit in the afternoon if you're practicing very hard.

Yeah I get what u mean. Yesterday I only slept for 4-5 hours and tdy when I booked a room to practice at school I can only practice a little bit for my pieces without going into detail. I'm too tired to practice well :(

It absolutely sucks to practice when you feel sleep deprived IMO. I sometimes feel like I'm doing more damage than progress when I try.

Listen to your body, if your body wants to rest and sleep, you should listen it.

Have a good nigh sleep, eating well, do exercise and meditate are essential for a good practice and performance as well.
