Hello!

I'm working on the chromatic scale provided by Marguerite Long in one of her French method ("Le piano de Marguerite Long"). I don't understand the way the fingering is noted with two fingers proposed at the same time (see picture below). Does it mean:
- I can use either one of them? But then, what about the "1 1"?
- I must use both of them? But again, what about "1 1"?

Thanks a lot!

Have a nice day.
Vincent

According to the text above the staff, the most common fingering is given on top (for each hand). So if you read the fingerings using only the upper numbers in each hand, you get the most common fingering. If you read the fingerings using the lower numbers for each hand you get an alternative fingering. When you have a one above a one on the same note, it just means that you use the thumb for that note whether you are using the standard fingering or the alternate.

Thanks brogers, it's very helpful. I was afraid it was something way more obscure!   :D

I'm glad it was helpful, but I gave you wrong advice. It's the fingering that is shown in full that is the standard. So, in the RH it's the lower fingering that is the standard, with the alternative shown above it, and in the LH it is the upper fingering that is standard, with the alternative shown below it.
