Advice for coming back to piano after a couple weeks break
on: October 05, 2022, 12:38:38 AM
Hi there!
Has anyone got advice for coming back to piano after a couple weeks break from practising? I am an advanced student who has been playing for 12 years. I completed my final high school performance exams a couple weeks ago and since then I haven't really practised. The pieces I were playing are listed below:
- Liszt Transcendental Etude No.4
- Prokofiev Toccata
- Debussy Reflets dans l'eau
- Michael Kieran Harvey Pink Nautilus
- Beethoven Symphony No.5 for Four Hands
I am thinking of learning new pieces (not sure which ones yet), but I still want to keep the Liszt and Beethoven for my teacher's recital coming up in a month and a half. Honestly I really miss the piano but am a bit scared about coming back since I've never taken more than a week off practising in the past.
Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Dust the piano first.
Seriously.
After two weeks there is likely to be a thin film of dust on the keys. Your fingers will slide and feel uncoordinated and you'll not know why, and you'll panic. Just dust the keys and go back to playing, everything will be fine.

What are you scared will happen when you come back from a long break? I would say, just do it
Be careful of any narratives you attach to any differences that may be present in your playing after a break (such as your technique being a little rusty), they're just that - narratives. You'll be back on track eventually.
