you know, with all good composers, they studied the music already written first.  i'd get some tracing paper and grab any piece of classical music that you like, and start copying it verbatum.  (i'd enlarge it a couple of %'s first)  you will then start to answer your own question.  and, go to the library a lot and read about each piece you analyze (composer and piece you are studying).

use the template of chords (at same points) to write a piece of your own.  use the same rhythms, but different notes.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

One of the ways in which great composers of the past learned was by copying music already written (in the days when printed music was rare).
It's GREAT to be a classical musician!

Have a look at this book:

Nicholas Cook: “Analysis through composition: The principles of the Classical style” (Oxford University Press)
