Jazz theory: Dom 7th chord to tonic chord

I understand that only a dominant 7th chord like G7 resolves to the tonic chord, I.e. C. What I don't understand is why it is only a dominant 7th chord. Why not, for example, G6, G9, G7sus2, G7sus4?
