Recital Repertoire

Was wondering if anyone could offer some input on building out my senior recital. Have Scriabin Sonata 2 learned, and will perform for an hour in June.

Am thinking of keeping it more romantic, and including the three Liszt Sonnets and maybe Rach sonata 2, however that seems a little ambitious for the amount of time I have.

Other ideas for pieces I’ve thought of are Chopin Ballade 4, and the Ballade from Granados’ Goyescas. Am open to any suggestions, thanks in advance.

You have a lot of heavy romantic music there. I tend to prefer recital programs that have a dramatic structure to them and a balance between heavier and lighter pieces. As a listener, you need something lighter on each side of something like the Rachmaninoff 2nd sonata, or you start feeling the length of the program. So you want to get some variation in character, thickness/lightness of texture, length, genre etc.

It would help if you share with us what limitations there are for choosing the program. If you are not limited by form or epoch, there must be a time limitation? If you could share more about this, I am sure some of us here can suggest more concrete ideas.

Having a Romantic program is not a bad idea, but you need to always look at recital programs like movies or books - they need to have a story with a plot, many twists and turns, many contrasts. I suggest thinking about including music from other periods as well.
