Where can I find Mephisto Waltz 4 sketches
on: March 25, 2023, 10:03:45 PM
On the internet, there are several versions of the obscure Mephisto Waltz 4, but both the S216b and the S696 sheet are short and incomplete. There was only the Allegro part of the music, but the unfinished Andantino sketch Liszt wrote was missing. I heard Setrak play the sketch of the andantino part but couldn't find the sheet music for this part. I also saw Leslie Howard's and Gunnar Johanson's (and even Pencilmate's) arrangement of the waltz, where they added on their own parts to this piece based on the themes from unfinished sketches of the middle part, but I could not find the sketches nor their arrangements. I know the typical performance of the piece is about 3 minutes, but it should be about 5 minutes including the sketches and for Howard and Johanson's editions, it's probably longer. Neverthless sketches and the musics for their arrangements are nowhere to be found. I don't know where they find the sheets. Can anyone help me locate? I am not a member of the Lisztian circlejerk

AFAIK, the second volume of Liszt Society Publications (Schott) has all 3 known sketches pubished as appendix. It is now available from Hardie Press
