Prokofiev Sonata No.3 fingerings
on: April 07, 2023, 03:28:11 PM
Hello, pianists! I`ll come clean from the start- I`m having difficulties with finding adequate fingerings for measure 110 of Prokofiev`s Sonata No.3. (as the editions I`ve encountered don`t have adnotated measures, just for making sure everybody knows what measure I`m talking about- 110 contains repeated notes (C 4 and C3 in sixteenth notes) and it is the 17th measure from the beginning of the Development section starting with `Allegro tempestoso`). I initially played it with 3-1-3-3, 3-2-3-3, but that fingering doesn`t work on certain pianos and sometimes my wrist gets blocked, so I need a more intelligent, efficient fingering that I cannot figure by myself.  :'( Is there anybody here that plays/ed the sonata and can help me with such fingerings? Thank you!  ;D

Nasty one, I had difficulties with this measure too until one professor suggested me 5-1-3-3, 3-2-3-3 (basically the one that does not work for you...), then it got much better. But what he also told me was to not be afraid by a little bit of agogics. It does not have to be completely mechanical, even though it's Prokofjev. So I took a little bit more time on the octave, released my hand and then made a small accelerando on the repeated notes. I think it was mostly the feeling that I do not have to rush it through and I have the time that helped me to manage this measure.

Hope this works for you too :)

Even though I musically view that measure (and the section it's integrated in) as motoric and that it maybe needs even acceleration, if the fingering I have for the moment doesn't allow me to do that, then I may be inclined to add emphasis on certain notes, as you suggested. Thank you and all the luck in your piano progress!  ;D

I understand you and in the beginning I had the same idea, but with the time I realized that having it completely strict is beyond my ability. Especially in the coda - if I had not not added a little of time and breath in it, I would have died. If you are not convinced yet, see Gilels' coda. It really does not sound very well, if it's rushed and without control.
Thank you for wishes and good luck with this sonata!

Have you tried something like 5-1-5-4 3-2-5-4 3-1-5-4 3-2-5-4 ?
