How Many Hours Should You Practice the Piano? – The Lines Between Science, Method and Passion

It is a timeless question, a persistent voice in the mind of every pianist: “How many hours must I practice to truly improve?” It springs from a perfectly legitimate desire to measure the commitment required to transform our ambitions into sound, whether that means playing a simple minuet or dreaming of the world’s most prestigious stages. Giulio Cinelli from Pianosolo.it guides us through this classic topic. Read more

Did Liszt pull a Kathy Perry?
on: April 16, 2023, 09:43:15 PM
Hello everybody,

today I was listening to Claudio Arrau playing Transcendental Étude No. 9 in A-flat "Ricordanza" by Liszt, and was stunned by how closely several passages reminded me of both the first and second movement of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21.
I read that many critics say the Liszt's Ètude is somewhat echoing Chopin's Étude Op. 10, No. 3, in E major, but to my (inexpert) ear, the similitudes to the 2nd Concerto are much more detectable.
Of course, I read that Liszt composed Ètude in 1826 at age 15, long before he met Chopin, and my title is just humorous.
Still, I'd like to hear some opinions about these similarities from you guys.

Best.

I must admit, i did not notice any similarity, and i think stuff like this could sometimes be coincidence.

But yeah it is really fun to look up into this things. For example, his Vision etude sounded like Chopin's ocean, and guess what...did not czerny also have a ocean etude? Now here is the catch. Chopin I think never gave the title to that piece, but it looked like Czerny did (?), and to my ears, the czerny actually paint a good picture of a tumultous waves better than chopin's. the question is, who copied whom, they were both made in the same year. ;D

Of course, I wouldn't think for a second that artists like Chopin or Liszt would, or need to, copy anyone. Beside being geniuses, people of that ear had moral standards that nowadays are hard to comprehend (studying Darwin's correspondence just gave me an example).
That makes these coincidences, oddities, or whatever we might call them, even more intriguing.
I will look up the etudies you mentioned and see what they sound to me.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I struggle to actually hear which passages are meant to imitate the Chopin Concerto.
Do I hear the same style of melodic flourishes that Chopin used? Sure...
Is the flourishes interwoven with moments of octave RH melodies? Sure...
Do I hear any similarity in the melodies?

No.
