Pieces with dramatic climaxes
on: April 20, 2023, 07:37:48 PM
Hi guys, I’m new to this forum and would love some suggestions for pieces with loud and intense climaxes. To give you an idea of what I’m looking for, rachs Etude tableaux 39/5’s return of the a section is a great example of what I love. Other pieces include the climax of the elegie 3/1, prelude in b minor 32/10 and the second of the danzas argentinas by Ginastera. (I’m trying to branch out of rach more but I keep finding myself coming back to him because of the passion and emotion in his climaxes).
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The Liszt sonata in b minor has a great climax before the quiet ending!

The first thing that came to mind was Scriabin's 7th Sonata, the recapitulation is similar to the Rachmaninov op.39/5 (melody in the middle of loud chords).. Then like Liszt's it has a big climax followed by a quiet ending. Richter's 1965 recording is my favourite.

The finale of Chopins 3rd Sonata is unmatched for me.
The end of the 2nd Scherzo is pretty exciting as well.
For a shorter piece Scriabin Etude op 8,12

Also, look at more Rach preludes and Etudes if you already liked some of that. Rach likes his climaxes.

A second suggestion for the Scriabin Fantasie. Very much a Rachmaninoff flavour in the main climax (there are arguably 3, I'm referring to the return of the second theme).
Rach 1's cadenza is chilling upon the return of the main theme. We joke at my school that the only reason anyone plays Rach 1 is for the cadenza (not that it's devoid of other great qualities, but just to emphasize that cadenza is really THAT great).
I'm sure you've heard the Appassionata. Movements 1 and 3 both have thrilling codas and development sections.

I have always loved the climax of Chopin's 2nd ballade. Played with sufficient fire it's very exciting.

Very good suggestions!
I also think the the climax on Chopin's 3rd ballade is something else... The whole ballade is just a climax in itself lol
