Chopin Heroic Polonaise vs B flat minor scherzo? Are they possible
on: May 16, 2023, 06:05:42 PM
Kind of a follow-up to my previous post. I am at a technical level above ABRSM and very motivated to practice. Are Chopin's Bb minor scherzo or Heroic Polonaise possible to learn? Or should I learn one before the other? Or are there any other Chopin pieces that are incredibly satisfying and impressive that I could try? Thanks in advance!!

Well yes considering millions of pianists have learnt and performed them they are very much possible to learn. I think anyone that has a grade 8 ABRSM diploma already has the prerequisite skills to learn these pieces. I don't know how old you are but if you plan on playing the piano for the rest of your life know this: you're not always going to have a teacher to tell you what to do and play, so might as well learn to make your own decisions now. Get the sheet music for the listed works you want to try out, sit at the piano, and try it out! If after a week or so you think you can't handle it then drop it and move on. Your hands won't fall off because you decided to experiment with a piece you weren't ready for. Be daring, be adventerous, and don't be scared of music.
Good luck.

If it weren't for the left hand octaves in the middle part of the Polonaise, I would argue it's the easiest. But it depends on your strengths and weaknesses, as with everything. I would say the Scherzo is easier than it sounds!

I am at a similar age and level of ability and I have been playing the scherzo for the last two months and I still haven't quite finished it so it certainly isn't easy; but I have been learning the pieces for a grade 8 exam at the same time so if you were just learning this piece you could probably do it faster than that!
