Good DVD's to buy?
on: February 17, 2005, 05:56:44 PM
What DVD's would you all recommend?

I prefer performances of sets (sonatas, Liszt etudes, etc.) but I want to know about everything and anything.

It is time that I started buying DVD's of performances and maybe even instruction videos?

i own all 8 'la roque d'antheron' dvds - these set the standard visually - and are IMO the best looking piano performances ive ever seen(awesome camera angles and great picture and sound quality)
the best ones IMO - are berezovsky, libetta, and lugansky.
i have watched these countless times, and to me they are each worth way more than they cost.

i also have many from the EMI classics range - i especially recommend cziffra- probably my favourite piano DVD(cziffra is my favourite pianist of course)

the BBC has 2 interesting sets released-
complete bach WTC - with 4 different pianists
and chopin's complete preludes and etudes , plus sonata 2 - with 3 different pianists

there are many more of course, but these spring to mind

also check out the great 'golden age of piano' and 'art of piano' - these are basically piano documentaries that show footage of horowitz, rubinstein et al.

check out Grigory Sokolov - theres another post in here about this.  He plays Beethoven, Komitas, Prokofiev, + 4 encores (couperin, chopin)

For whatever reason the selection is extremely limited in the US.  These are my favorites:

- The Art of the Piano

- The Golden Age of the Piano

- Great Pianists of the Bell Telephone Hour

The TDK issues of Karajan performances include piano concertos.  I have one of Evgeny Kissin's first Tchaikovsky.  I don't like the performance at all, but I'm almost positive that it is because of the conductor, not the performer (even though Kissin was 17 at the time).

I'm going to go ahead and be demanding here, because I would LOVE to buy some DVD's, and I'm not quite sure that I trust myself to find the right thing on amazon. Are any of you willing to put a page link for specific DVD's here?

Outside of piano, I have several dvds of the fantastic classical organ virtuoso, Virgil Fox.  See www.virgilfoxlegacy.com.  I also have the dvd mentioned above, "The Art of The Piano," the clips of Cziffra and Horowitz make it a worthwhile purchase.
