Tips for rachmaninoff Moment Musical No.4
on: July 06, 2023, 12:08:16 PM
Just looking for some general practice tips + an estimation of how long it will take me (a past grade 8 ASBRS level player) to learn this piece with approx 1-2 hour of practice every day? looking through the piece i think the main difficulty is not going to be notes but rather speed (especially in the left hand) Right now I am having trouble bringing the left hand up to the same speed as the right hand in the simultaneous runs (the cascades)

Impossible to estimate or answer without knowing your strengths and weaknesses and where you are at in your development. That's probably why nobody has answered. Have you gone through the score? What are you having trouble with?

Well you'll need a relaxed and efficient technique to play this piece. Don't try to force speed or you'll just get lacklustre results. If you have to ask how to get the left hand up to speed this piece might be too difficult for you right now.

Speed hasn't been a problem for any other sections of the piece - just these final runs down, the right hand seems to get Infront of the left here - I was wondering if there were any exercises or if like anything else, it just requires intense hands-seperate practice?

If you have questions about specific bars and want to discuss them that would most likely bring about more interesting discussion,

In general we should practice with controlled playing rather than merely praticing speed with inefficiency. So why not just learn the piece at a slower controlled tempo at first and then focus on the speed later on when you have memorized everything perfectly and play everything with the correct fingering. Then you usually have a better platform to then focus on the tempo.
