Why is this so difficult?

I seem to keep getting the right and left hand parts criss-crossed in my mind.

Hands separately I can coast through ok, it’s only with hands together that I’m struggling and stumbling like a cow on stilts.

Keeping track of separate melodies in each hand is more difficult than just playing one melody with chords as accompaniment. It's just more to keep track of.
