Very often we can observe that the 'PIN' that goes through the hole of 'the hammer butt flange' upright piano is lost there. This can be seen when the pin extends beyond the border of one of the flange's bushes (either on the right or left side). Consequently, the hammer starts swinging from side to side, leading to poor stability. This ultimately affects the accuracy of the hammer strike on the strings. How can this issue be resolved?

If you notice that the pin has shifted slightly to the left of 'the hammer butt flange', you can try to correct it using a screwdriver. Gently push on the end of the pin to realign it. This can be done without removing the hammer from the action of the upright piano.

If the pin does not realign properly using the screwdriver, you can remove the hammer from the upright piano's action. This usually involves unscrewing the hammer from its mounting point. Once removed hammer, use the pliers there. Open out the cheeks of the pliers there. Pressing on one of the cheek of the pliers on the tip of the pin but second of the cheek set to the 'the hammer butt flange' and carefully adjust it back into position. How made it in Max's movie there. Be cautious not to overtighten or damage the pin and the hammer there.

In case the hammer "dangles" excessively into 'the hammer butt flange', it may indicate a worn-out or damaged cloth bushes there. In this situation, you may need to replace the pin with one of a larger diameter. Reinstalling a larger pin should provide a better fit and stability.

If the aforementioned techniques do not resolve the issue, it is advisable to seek assistance from a professional piano tuner or technician. They have the expertise and tools to replace the old hammer butt flange or install new cloth bushes, as necessary, to restore the functionality and stability of the hammer.
