Two Reasons for Inadequate Piano Hammer Action and How to Fix It.
on: October 02, 2023, 08:57:37 AM
In the video, we clearly observe that the upright piano hammer exhibits inadequate performance. Specifically, during keypress, we notice an unacceptable deviation in the hammer's movement amplitude. In other words, the hammer performs unnecessary lateral movements before striking the string. Additionally, it lightly contacts its right-hand neighbor 'the 'hammer felt' too. Furthermore, we can see that the neighboring hammer attempts a slight deviation but it's key don't press there.
So, what's the cause, and how can you rectify this yourself?
The Cause:
The issue stems from 'the pin' of the jack flange' being loose. This pin has partially shifted to the right, exiting the hole in 'the jack flange'. As a result, the pin's edge catches during the hammer's movement, behind the neighboring 'the wippen'. Furthermore, the hammer exhibits excessive oscillation due to inadequate attachment of 'the hammer butt flange' too.
How to Fix It:
1 Using your left hand fingers, hold 'the jack flange of the wippen'. It's best to do this in a way that allows 'the jack' to return to its standard position by shifting it to the left and aligning its hole with the external hole in 'the jack flange'. Simultaneously, with your right hand, use a screwdriver to gently press from the right on the tip of 'the pin' to return it to its standard position within 'the jack flange of the wippen'. You should feel 'the pin' gradually moving toward the hole in the external left wall of 'the bush of the flange'. When you have fully positioned 'the pin' in 'the bush of the flange', the "jack" should be situated exactly like all other 'the jacks' of the neighboring hammers. Specifically, its upper part should be centered relative to 'the hammer butt felt'.
2 Use a screwdriver to tighten the hammer's screw 'the screw of the hammer butt flange'.
3 Test the hammer's performance. If you have done everything correctly, fixed the HAMMER action now should differ from what we observed in the video.
Good luck!
