California Proposition 50 also almost certainly passed, and Mikie Sherrill won the New Jersey governorship.
Sounds good! I was excited about Virginia because we're blue again in a blue state, instead of that other guy that basically no one liked.

Here is a list of major issues frequently cited in current political discussions:

1. The Economy and Cost of Living
Inflation and Prices: Concerns over the cost of living, including groceries, energy, and housing, remain a top issue for voters, even if some national metrics show improvement.

Economic Discontent: There is significant public sentiment that many families are not getting ahead financially, which is impacting how voters view the current administration's economic stewardship.

Trade Policy: Issues like the implementation and impact of tariffs are actively debated.

2. Immigration and Border Security
Border Enforcement: Policies related to securing the border, including deportation efforts, asylum processes, and border infrastructure (like the wall), are central to the political debate.

3. Government Operations and Dysfunction
Government Shutdowns: Recent and ongoing government shutdowns and legislative stalemates over funding demonstrate a major point of political contention and impact essential services.

Government Accountability/Reform: Debates continue over reforming the federal bureaucracy and addressing concerns about the "weaponization of government" or lack of accountability.

4. Social and Cultural Issues
Abortion: This remains a highly charged and prominent issue following major legal and legislative shifts.

Civil Rights and Liberties: Topics include LGBTQ acceptance, discrimination, and debates over DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs.

Gun Policy: Gun control and gun rights remain a consistent focal point.

5. Crime and Safety
Crime Rates: Concerns about crime and criminal justice reform continue to be a significant issue, particularly in urban areas.

6. Foreign Policy and National Security
International Conflicts: Ongoing engagement and policy decisions regarding major global events, such as the Israel-Hamas conflict and the war in Ukraine, factor into national security discussions.

These issues often see significant partisan divides in how they are viewed and what solutions are proposed.

Though if you want to discuss politics, then here's one of the most depressing and horrifying things of the 21st century. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-documentary/the-shutdown-of-usaid-has-already-killed-hundreds-of-thousands
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-01191-z

In the four months since USAID was cut, over 600,000 people have died because of it. That's almost double the estimate for the number of people who have died in the eleven-year-long Genocide in Ukraine, and nearly nine times the number of people who have been killed in the Genocide in Gaza.

Nature estimates that over 25 million people will die from USAID cuts over the next 15 years. For reference, the Armenian, Cambodian, Rwandan, Ukrainian, Darfur, Bosnian, and Gaza Genocides, as well as the Holocaust and Holodomor, sum to "only" about 22 million deaths. The entirety of World War One killed somewhere between 15 and 22 million.

And hardly any news outlet is covering this.

I don't know about that. Depending how badly the economy gets f_cked up, it might not be too far-fetched to see an AOC presidency. It'd certainly be a lot better than the transphobe who seems to be the current frontrunner.

Then again, it took the Great Depression for the US to get it's only actually leftist president, and there's also a nonzero chance that there won't be a real US election in 2028. At least that second outcome isn't very likely.

LBJ and Biden were centrist-adjacent, and would probably barely fall in to the center-left category (at least by Euro-Canadian standards).

Obama is center-right. He doesn't even support LGBTQIA+ rights (last I checked), and the only reason gay marriage happened under him is because Biden pushed him HARD on it.

Oh yeh i remmber seeing smth about 2024 being rigged. I asume you know all about htat?
2024 was... weird, to say the least. There's a ton of stuff that might theoretically indicate that the election was fixed (for example, all 88 counties that flipped in 2024 from the 2020 election went from Biden to Trump, the only prior instance of this being in 1932 with even 1984 seeing about 30 counties flip blue). There's also all of the polls (e.g. Ann Selzer Iowa poll), predictions (e.g. Allan Lichtman's Keys to the White House), etc. going for Harris. (Maybe it's just confirmation bias though. I remember that 538 had the odds at 50/50 on election day, for instance.)

The problem is that every single claim that Harris was the winner has no sourcing or analyses attached. I've seen plenty of stuff claiming "Russia interfered in this way" or "a software update rigged the voting machines" or the like, but I've never actually seen a source, or a link to the actual analysis behind the claim, or anything that can be independently verified.

What we know happened, though, is voter suppression, like just about every election in the US (https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/lasting-effects-voter-suppression, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_efforts_to_restrict_voting_following_the_2020_presidential_election). That alone was responsible for flipping the Rust Belt and Georgia to Trump (https://hartmannreport.com/p/0ef5118a-d23b-4842-8ebc-da9b578f73fc).

And either way, it doesn't matter in the slightest. AFAIK there's no precedent for removing a sitting elected official from office -- let alone a president -- because they didn't actually win their election or did so by illegal means, and there's certainly no precedent for replacing them with their opponent/the "legitimate" winner.

My mistake, apparently that was a lie that he told on the campaign. Still cowardly, though.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/feb/10/obama-frustrated-same-sex-marriage-david-axelrod-book

I'll try to find the thing that said that it was Biden who was responsible for convincing Obama to "change his mind" on the issue, but I don't think I'll find it (it was about 10 years ago), and odds are that whatever it was was incorrect anyway.

Well that was one of the most depressing things ive ever read.
Did you not read the last section?

"We saw that in 2020 when, despite extreme, even felonious actions by Trump supporters to block, challenge and disqualify voters and ballots, the theft by suppression was defeated.

That was the work of voting rights groups challenging these attacks. The work was done in the courts and, more important, in the precincts, re-registering the purged, challenging the challenges, “curing” disqualified ballots.

The road is long but victory is certain. After the 2016 election, the Palast team uncovered a cruel, racist purge program called, “Interstate Crosscheck” that cost nearly a million voters, overwhelmingly minorities, their rights. This motivated the Rev. Jesse Jackson to launch a campaign that successfully shut down Crosscheck. Unquestionably, Joe Biden could not have won in 2020 without the Reverend saving literally hundreds of thousands of votes. The point is, they can’t suppress all the votes all the time.

In other words, Democracy can win, despite the 2.3% suppression headwind.

And that’s our job as Americans: to end the purges, the vigilante challenges, the ballot rejections and the attitude that this is all somehow OK.

Martin Luther King gave us our marching orders in 1965, in words just as important today.

'Let us march on ballot boxes, march on ballot boxes until race-baiters disappear from the political arena. I want to say to the people of America and the nations of the world, that we are not about to turn around. We are on the move now.'"

Maybe not (hopefully not), but we're definitely getting a Democrat; odds are high that we're getting a Democratic House as well, and better than even for a Democratic Senate.

American politics especially is mostly a series of backlashes. We're currently living through a period of right-wing backlash against those who have gained more rights in the last few decades. That backlash is already becoming immensely unpopular. It won't be long before we see a leftist backlash in response -- heck, it's already started (see the NYC mayoral race). We just have to hang in there until it arrives.

High effort posting is only worth it if you want to actually have a conversation, as we do on this thread. Even then though, even the highest-effort posts will be quickly defeated by minimal-effort posts.
