Rach was being supportive of a friend and Liszt was just being humble. Keep the dense textures of Medtner and empty virtuosity of Alkan. I'll keep Chopin and Rach—Who actually understood that the piano is an instrument not a calculator.

1. This makes it a lot more obvious that you used predictive text, lol.

2. Medtner isn't any "denser" than Rachmaninoff; if anything Rachmaninoff often writing music to fit his giant hands made his pieces a lot "denser" than Medtner's.

3. Alkan isn't "empty virtuosity" and I made an entire thread debunking this: https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php?topic=80296.0.

4. Chopin and Rachmaninoff knew how to write fairly simple, "easy listening" music that doesn't need to be analyzed very heavily at all to be thoroughly enjoyed. Contrast this with Medtner, whose works almost always need at least a few listens to grow on you, or Alkan, whose genius only becomes apparent after you extensively analyze the piece in question (as I said in the "Alkan is not 'empty virtuosity'" thread, this is ignoring his early period).

5. If you want a composer who treated piano as a mathematical instrument, then I suggest Xenakis. :)

I just don't like Mozart's solo piano compositions, lol. His contemporaries (e.g. Clementi) are much better in that regard, though Mozart is unmatched for chamber/orchestral music (at least until 1877).

K. 533 is an exception... in some cases. I love Alicia de Larrocha's recording, but (e.g.) I don't particularly like Uchida's and really don't like Barenboim's.

I may as well add that I think a lot of the reason people don't like that community is because the loudest group happens to be the (extremely loud) NSFW part of it. Imagine if the only things aliens knew about humans came from pornhub.

Still, you can find plenty of the non-NSFW variety even just by stumbling on it. Though if you recoil at the sight of fur, then you'll probably have blocked most of the communities where they exist.

Just... don't get your hopes up. For Texas, Ohio, Alaska, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, any of them. Especially this early.

If the predictive text bubble bursts in mid-October and the entire stock market crashes at a similar level to what happened at the start of the Great Depression, and the US-Iran war has continued to escalate and nothing that can be spun as a peace deal seems remotely close, and there are real signs (not posts by armchair reddit pundits) showing that voter suppression isn't as effective this cycle as it was in 2024, then you can start to have a little hope.

There are many good politicians here in Virginia, so it's ridiculous that there's an uncontested Democratic primary for Senate. I was planning to vote for Lorita Daniels, a traditionally "unqualified," obscure candidate because almost any Democrat tops Warner. She has since dropped out. I wish I could at least write in a real person. I looked at the one independent (normally I would worry about the spoiler effect but in this case I want Warner out so bad) and he's no better. And all of the Republicans are pretty much Trump-aligned, so it looks like Warner is still unfortunately the way to go.
