Favorite Haydn Sonata
on: October 11, 2023, 09:54:24 PM
I'm surprised this thread hasn't started yet, I was going to post mine today and realized this thread didn't exist.
Well, mine is Hob. XVI:50 in C Major. The first movement has contrasting, yet coherent themes suggestive of Beethoven and Schubert. The second movement is just nice, it's evocative of the better Mozart 2nd movements. The third movement is very humorous and Haydenesque, interesting in its own way. Far ahead of its time, rambling and concise.

I guess no one has a favorite Haydn Sonata. I know I don't. Haven't played one since college. I'm more interested in music from 1890's forward - Debussy, Ravel, Scriabin, Bartok, Prokofiev, Poulenc.

LMAO I like the Haydn sonatas but it's hard to pick a favorite. They're all beautifully done but they don't stand out in my memory the way some of Beethoven's sonatas do.

I do not have a favorite, but love many.
My main issue is that many performers play them a little bit too fast. Such a tempo sounds good on harpsichord, but on modern piano it sounds somewhat mechanical and soulless IMO, like an exercise and not a piece of art.

Those tempos sound good on harpsichord? That's why you listen to them on harpsichord! Corti has a really rad album with a few!
