This British article about vision relating to high contrast patterns pretty much nails what my eyes do when I try to read sheet music.

I have been susceptible to migraines since I was 12 so that may play a role.

I'm sharing this just in case other students struggle with sight reading and don't understand why.

The link is invalid. Besides, when I see stripes or a pattern, it becomes hard to focus and it hurts my eyes
