the miscellaneous ramblings of tash
on: February 20, 2005, 11:57:50 PM
ok i've been off in melbourne the past week and there's llike 500 unread posts here and can i be bothered reading through them right now? hell no, but i might eventually.

but anyway, i wanted to comment on a few things i've seen the past few weeks, the first being the seeing of my first opera- prokofiev's the love of three oranges, and can i say that is the COOLEST thing i've ever seen! my god the set design and costumes were amazing, and the opera was hilarious, so i'm now in love with opera and want to become an opera singer.
does anyone know of a recording of the actual opera? cos the orchestral suite's easy enough to find but i haven't encountered the opera recording. oh and i want a video or dvd of it too to compare Opera Australia's version to others. wow i'm so impressed with opera now, shame i can't sing...

also went to see whilst in melbourne angela hewitt playing with the australian chamber orchestra, and that was good, i loved the way half the members stumbled onto the stage in the middle of the first piece- i can't remember what it actually was haha, but i think there's a thread on this concert somewhere else here, i should really go get the program...
as for ms hewitt's playing, i thought she had nice technique, very clean, however in the bach concertos ( D major and G minor, i was slightly disappointed cos i wanted to hear the A major cos it's my have) i thought she was bit drowned out by the orchestra, maybe it was just the acoustics of the Hamer Hall or where i was sitting i dunno. but i still liked it. the brandenburg concerto no5 was good, a bit speedy for my likeing, but it was interesting to hear the keyboard part on the piano rather than harpsichord. and the last piece was good to end on too.

so in concerts to come, i'm wanting to see the Beethoven gala thingy the sydney symphony's doing. anyone else seeing it? should be good woohoo.

so the point of this thread...i dont know...if you want to comment on anything feel free to do so!

you are funny and a fun girl, you always bring a smile to my face  :D

i have also realised the greatness of opera, theres quite alot of opera DVDs available if you look around

one thing i dont like so much about opera is the cheesiness of the productions - the music is awesome obviously, but the way it is portrayed could benefit from modernisation and a less 'camp' element.

hey tash, great to have you back! Sounds like you had a good time. :)
Heh, well, half of the posts were just ":)" and one-phrasers so it shouldn't take too long to read through.  ::)  :P

I'm really getting into opera as well!! My piano teacher knows Renee Fleming, the current "it" girl of opera, so I started looking into it. I've always liked musicals and voice, so I think its really cool. Check out this site, theres some amazing singing in the clips - really low and high notes and just cool songs: https://www.dutchdivas.net/frames2/highC.html

My mind feels out of breath reading that!

Also, I have a video file of the Love for Three Oranges. It is STRANGE. At one point, the Village People. yes, THE VILLAGE PEOPLE, Chief Guy, Police Man, Construction Worker, all those guys, pop into the middle of the scene. I was SOOOO CONFUSED!!! Also, it didn't help that the entire thing is in French...

aw i feel loved :)
meanwhile what was cool about the opera was that it was really modern, like the sets and the dance and costumes were all cool and bizarre- i loved the oranges, they were these giant orange roundish shapes, kind of shiny, and then they opened like they had petals and these funny oranges with green legs popped out and you lifted the top half of the orange off and the lower half falls down into this fat pink dress and voila a princess!! so that's why i'd like to look at an older one to see how it compares to this very modern version. it was also good that it was in english, not that i could understand what they were saying half the time anyway so was quickly looking at the subtitles.
yes i'll go on a search to find the dvd i think.
villiage people?? i don't remember them, there were a whole heap of queer eye inspired men in red and yellow clothes who wandered about the stage though
