Help me pick a piece
on: January 27, 2024, 03:09:52 PM
Hello, so I’m searching for help for a new piece. I played the Papillons Op.2 by Schuhmann, some Chopin waltzes, some Bach pieces by the wohltemperiertes Klavier book, two Haydn sonatas and a Chopin polonaise. Of course bunch of other pieces by I can’t remember the ones because they’re more likely irrelevant. But now I asked my teacher if I’d could have a more challenging piece and he asked what I’m thinking of but I have no clue how difficult a piece ist to me. Of course I sight read difficult passages of the works I thought about like the 2.ballde by Chopin and I couldn’t really tell how I’d do if I’d practiced the section properly because while playing I’d thought well it’s definitely not easy but it’s not as hard as i thought I’d be… but the pieces I played till now are according to forums and henle way easier so I’m confused any suggestions?

I recommend Debussy's "Pour le Piano" - sounds like you haven't played pieces from after 1890, so this would be something new and fresh.  It will be challenging but do-able, not nearly as difficult as Chopin's 2nd ballade.  A shorter piece, from the same time period, very beautiful with some new challenges for you would be Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte".  Another is Ravel's Sonatine.

Hey thanks for the kind reply. I’ll take a look at these pieces. I scrolled through similar questions and I discovered some new pieces I’d like you to ask about their difficulty. Referring to the first scherzo by Chopin, the second, liebesleid by Rachmaninoff, rachmaninoffs sonata op.2 no.36 second version non allegro. Liebesträume, sonetto patrach ( forgot the name ). I gues these are famous? Idk I heard them my first time today

Yes those are all famous pieces but it's not weird to not have heard of them if you are not immersed in or regularly exploring classical music a lot of the time.

You could try the Debussy Arabesque no. 1 and see how you fare. It's difficult to really know what level you are with what you have said so far. The Chopin ballade no. 2 is a pretty hard piece yes, so it depends if you found the passages easy reading them slowly or trying them in concert tempo :p

Toji - May I recommend you be really considerate when asking for help and list the pieces carefully, on separate lines, getting all the information complete and correct.  I understand some of what you wrote but not all of it.  I'm sure many people could comment on the difficulty of those pieces, but how about making it easy for them?   The same goes for the pieces you've played - list them carefully and correctly, and whether you performed them in recital (this helps us gauge how much you worked on it).  You can edit you're initial post.  It just takes a little bit more time to be clear and complete...
