Apps to learn to sight read
on: January 29, 2024, 10:11:42 PM
Hi,

I'm trying to get better at sight reading (I'm awful at it) and I was wondering if anyone is aware of a good app for this.

I've looked at the descriptions of several piano learning apps, but I have yet to see what I have in mind. I'm thinking about an app that would have sight reading drills. Something along the lines of a random series of notes or sets of notes that appear and that you have to play on the keyboard, and you have to get as many of them correct in a set amount of time. A bit like the Music Tutor app for phones, but where you would have to hit the keys instead of the note's name on the screen, and (ideally) with more than just single notes at at time.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I should have mentionned that I'm on Windows and Android.

I found the Piano Marvel website, which has pretty much what I'm looking for, although it has some flaws.

https://imslp.org/wiki/Sight_Reading_Exercises%2C_Op.45_(Sartorio%2C_Arnoldo) this book of sight reading exercises often gets passed around here, but it's not an app, just a normal book. But a highly useful one.

Hi, I am also looking to improve my music reading skills. I find Simply Piano and Piano Maestro to be useful apps for reading practice. They allow you to play directly on the piano with different notes, not just note names. You can also try Auralia, it provides various exercises to improve your skills 2 player games. Hope you find the right app to practice!

ABRSM has Piano Sight-Reading Trainer app, but I do not know what it offers.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
