Cliburn Commissioned Pieces
on: February 27, 2024, 11:06:42 PM
Hi all,

Can anyone provide a list of commissioned works for the Cliburn? I found ones for 2022, 2017, and 2013, as well as Bernstein's "Touches", but I can't find any others. For background, I have learned and performed the Fanfare Toccata (2022), and I want to learn another one because these pieces are good choices for the contemporary era repertoire.

Any help is appreciated :)

I don't have a one-stop list for you.  I just know the information is gatherable.

how/what has your research been so far?

have you emailed the cliburn organization?

Hi! I relate to your interest—Cliburn commissions are truly rewarding to play. Besides the ones you mentioned, there are great works by Mason Bates, John Musto, and William Bolcom worth exploring. Glad to see others enjoying this repertoire!

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
