American Idol
on: February 22, 2005, 04:11:55 AM
Hey I cant believe we havent talked about American Idol on this forum before!!

Are there any hardcore fans out there?  or better yet - has anyone ever gone to audition?

Im a pretty big fan, but tonight's episode of the men singing sort of dissapointed me because I disagreed with the judges on almost every single singer.  It seems they call you boring if you dont go out there and put it over the top every time.  I dont know.. I find it all so exhausting to hear them scream their heads off all the time.  And then someone comes along with a nice voice and the Judges seem to get cranky..

What do you think?

I only watch the first few episodes where Simon pwns all the crappy singers(I'm not much better than them, but, unlike them, I'm aware of that fact.)  After that, the fact that I don't like the music they sing sets in, and I stop.

I have to agree that the singers over-exert themselves on the songs.  "Lets see... I'll trill this note... and that note... and a run here... a little vocal cadenza here... you know what... better add a few trills in that cadenza..."

Overall I think Simon is my favorite judge.  He's tactless and I disagree with him sometimes(but not as often as I disagree with the other two,)  but he's honest about people's talents and prospects.

Sometimes I question the ability of the judges to understand technique  - like Randy said earlier tonight "You were a little off key." Paula: "you had some pitch problems."  What's weird is that whenever I think someone is off key I'm expecting them to say something - they don't.  Then when I think they're on key, the judges will say something to the effect of "you went off key a little bit here."  Is is just me?  My music teacher thinks I have excellent pitch memory and ability, so I know I can't be off all the time.  Unless I just don't know the HALF-ASS songs they sing half the time.  Argh.   Though I liked Seal's  "Kiss from a Rose" and was eager to hear that kid's cover of it.  Still love the show despite its flaws.  Sometimes I think of the pressure put on these kids (and I say kids because there's no one over 28 in this group) - "Ok, you're talented, you know music - now we expect you to DELIVER."  It's not enough that you give a flawless performance - you need to deliver something extra.  And I guess that's required and expected of all musicians, in a way.  So a show like this humbles me because I realize I had damn well get these notes down in my own pieces of music, iron out technical problems, and deliver the goods or what chance do I stand in a career at music?
Who's your early pick?  I say Bo Dice (not sure of spelling or pronunciation here), the "rocker", will make it far.  He's got the looks, the charisma, and damn good vocals to back it up.  Thought he gave a flawless performance and added to it as well tonight.  He's also different from the other contestants, and not "bland."  The fact that he is different may mean he will not go as far, but who knows?
I thought the comment Simon Cowell made about the singer at the very end who had excellent charisma but not as much technique as the other singers had relevance.  So you CAN make up for lack of technique (or lack of charisma, interpretation) if you've got other things to show for it.  Everyone has their strengths.  You may find someone who has everything but the technique, and then someone who has the technique but no interpretation or individuality.  So it's going to be interesting to see who develops, in both areas, as the show progresses.  But that rocker guy seems to have both together, and this could very well help propel him into the finals.

I think the Vasquez boy has a chance at winning the whole thing -- that's the last guy on tonight with the tons of charisma and stage presence.  He took on a pretty difficult Stevie Wonder song, and sure there are better voices, but no better performers, like Simon said.  In the world of pop that can make all the difference.  It's somewhat parallel to the phenomenon we see with classical pianists: there are the phenomenal technicians with no overwheliming musicality, and then the ones with somewhat less technique but tremendous musicality.  Just a thought.   8)

Vasquez is ok... But I was actually rooting for that Russian kid with the Vocal chord childhood thing...errr... um Fedrerov!  yeah, him.  I agreed with Cowell about Constantine having more Charisma compared to Dice or whatever his name was..

I watched it once or twice cause my daughter had it on.  HATED IT!  I also coach vocals.  Putting amateur singers, unprepared, badly dressed, and what's with the horid back up?, is my idea of torture.  My general comment.  Yuck!

I beg to differ with you.  I have a seven year old student who would like to be on the show.  He is NOT seeing it as comedy.  He wants to win, to compete.   Sure it's a goof, but  I dare say millions of kids are not getting that.

who were those twins that said one brother was dissed so he wasn't going to even stay...but then they let them both in (because they were brothers).  but, one has been found to have a criminal record or mug shot over something?

that show seems like a paraody on musicianship.  if you have a large ego, and a halfway decent voice, you might win.  it's a good show to learn what not to do with stage presence.

I haven't watched an episode of American Idol in like 3 years, but a few nights ago I had a dream I was competing in the American Idol competition, but I didn't learn my lyrics (to the Titanic "My Heart Will go On" song randomly) because I was in the pool making out with American Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, who is so TOTALLY hot, and so TOTALLY gay.

In UK it's called "Pop Idol"?  The TV show where people compete to be named the best singer.

But who cares; look how freakin ADORABLE Johnny Weir is!!!
